After going to Lourdes as part of the Clogher Don Oige youth pilgrimage, it soon became clear what a great opportunity it was for any young person. It was a very fulfilling and rewarding experience, helping the sick pilgrims, visiting Lourdes and meeting a lovely group of forty new people.

For me the best part of the youth pilgrimage to Lourdes was meeting the assisted pilgrims, for whom the whole excursion was designed. They definitely kept us ‘alive, alert, aloud and enthusiastic’ despite the 6am wakeup calls which we soon learned to dread. Although nervous at first, we soon got to know the other pilgrims and they were the life and soul of the pilgrimage.

The youth group were very involved in the many different religious services while in Lourdes. We read prayers, reflections, and readings, took part in the choir and participated in the Eucharistic Adoration service.

We were also fortunate to have Bishop Joseph Duffy accompany us on our pilgrimage for the last time as Bishop of Clogher to take part in our services. For most of the group, visiting the Baths was one of the most emotional challenges which Lourdes had to offer. Presenting individual intentions to Our Lady was a very personal experience and one which was special to all who took part. The candlelight procession was probably one of the most beautiful ceremonies at Lourdes, something everyone should have the chance to witness.

For the youth pilgrims however it wasn’t all work and no play. In our free time we forgot the spiritual side of things and experienced all the tourist attractions Lourdes had to offer. We indulged in ice cream and crepes and sang our hearts out to Journey’s ‘Don’t stop believing alongside many other cheesy classics in cafes while being entertained by some genuine French dancing. We also visited a funfair. How fun this experience was for some of the pilgrims soon became debatable after a few too many fast rides left us a bit worse for wear.

We also had the chance to party with the assisted pilgrims at a Céilidh in the hospital. The talented people of Clogher came together and put on a brilliant show. From Irish Ballads to line dancers and clowns, we had it all. It was an evening enjoyed by all, with the only downfall being that it ended all too soon.

After returning from Lourdes, it was clear that it had been an amazing experience, one which can hopefully be repeated next year.
