Haiti Earthquake and Pope John Paul II Award

Haiti Earthquake and the Pope John Paul II AwardA-child-injured-in-an-ear-001

Many of us have been deeply touched and saddened by the consequences of the recent earthquake in Haiti. It is impossible to imagine the pain and suffering the people are going through in Haiti at the minute. Quite often we feel powerless to help those as we are so far away.

The Pope John Paul II Award calls young people to charitable work to help those who are less fortunate than us like the people of Haiti. I would encourage young people participating in the award to organise, get involved, fundraise and raise awareness of the terrible situation in Haiti. Such activities and projects can be used towards social awareness hours for those participating in the Award.

Below are just a few ideas of projects and activities.

  • Get involved in existing Church Collections – collect money during Mass and help to count and process afterwards.
  • Fundraising – Parish/Community Flag day, Coffee Morning, Car Wash, Bag packing in local supermarket, community talent show event. There are many other good fundraising events not included.
  • Raise awareness by putting up a display or speaking at Mass/other community event.
  • Organise a Special Liturgy or Vigil in the Community to remember those who have died or been affected by the events in Haiti.

These are just a few ideas but do what you can to help. For more details on the events in Haiti click here(http://www.trocaire.org/whatwedo/emergencies/haiti-earthquake-appeal)
